Variations on Slovak Folk Song, Op. 33
Written in 2019
Dedicated to her professor doc. Lucia Papanetzová, Art.D., this cycle takes “the most beautiful Slovak folk song” as its theme, unfolding in six variations and a Maestoso finale. Written for solo piano, the work balances respect for tradition with fresh harmonic and rhythmic treatment.
The Theme is presented simply in Lento, allowing the melody to speak clearly. Each Variation transforms it in character, texture, or tempo:
Variation I – Moderato: A gentle transformation that keeps the folk character intact while adding ornamental detail.
Variation II – Tempo di Polka: Rhythmic vitality and accented syncopations infuse the melody with dance energy.
Variation III – Allegro con brio: A bright, spirited reimagining with virtuoso passagework.
Variation IV – Vivo giocoso: Playful and lively, the folk tune becomes a sparkling scherzo.
Variation V – Lento religioso: A meditative setting, with sustained harmonies and expressive depth.
Variation VI – Moderato: A poised, elegant transformation, preparing the way to the finale.
The Finale – Maestoso crowns the cycle with grandeur, returning to a full-bodied statement of the theme. Combining strength, lyricism, and pianistic brilliance, it closes the work in a celebratory and dignified spirit.
