Programme notes:

Tereza Jaďuďová (b. 2001)
String Quartet No.1, Op. 37
Written in 2019-2020

Tereza Jaďuďová’s String Quartet No. 1 stands as a significant work in her chamber music catalogue, blending Romantic expressiveness with a clear sense of form. Written for the Mucha Quartet, the composition shows a deep understanding of the idiomatic possibilities of the ensemble. The four movements progress from lyrical intensity to structural clarity, culminating in a set of variations also arranged for string orchestra (Op. 37a).

I.
Opening with a Largo, the first movement moves into Allegro ma non troppo, establishing thematic material with a blend of lyricism and rhythmic drive. The movement balances lyrical lines with lively development, creating a sense of forward momentum.

II. Romanza
Marked Largo sostenuto, the Romanza provides a lyrical contrast. With muted strings (con sordini), its tender melodic writing conveys intimacy, supported by a delicate harmonic palette.

III.
The third movement brings energy with Allegro con brio, introducing rhythmic vitality and sharp articulation. Contrasts in texture and dynamic shape contribute to its playful yet driven character.

IV. Variations
The finale takes the form of a theme with variations. The theme („Ej padá, padá rosička„) is presented with clarity before moving through varied transformations, each with distinct color and character. The set concludes with brilliance, reflecting the versatility of the quartet medium.
