Tereza Jaďuďová (b. 2001)
Serenade for Strings, Op. 50
Written in 2020

Composed over the course of several weeks in the autumn of 2020, Jaďuďová’s Serenade for Strings shows her mastery of writing for a homogeneous ensemble, combining clarity of form, melodic immediacy, and expressive depth. Subtitled “I aimed too high…”, the work unfolds in five interconnected movements, each with a distinct character while contributing to the whole.

I. Preludium
Opening Adagio maestoso, the Preludium presents a noble, sustained introduction. The music moves in broad phrases and rich harmonies, establishing a dignified yet introspective tone.

II. Valse
Beginning Poco Larghetto, the Valse balances grace with restraint. Solos and tutti alternate fluidly, the tempo quickens to Allegro ma non troppo, and elegant dance rhythms are coloured by subtle harmonic shading.

III. Romanza
The Adagio molto Romanza offers the most intimate moment of the Serenade. Muted strings and solo passages create a lyrical, tender sound world, with phrases unfolding in long, expressive arcs.

IV. Danse
Marked Allegro barbaro, the Danse brings an energetic, rhythmic drive. Strong accents, pizzicato figures, and vigorous bowing patterns give this movement a vivid, almost rustic character.

V. Postludium
Returning to a slower pace, the Postludium closes the Serenade in a reflective tone. The final phrases fade into quiet resolution, completing the work with poise and serenity.
