SAXOPHONE FOR ERIK
Written in 2023
Written at the request of virtuoso saxophonist Erik Rothenstein, Saxophone for Erik is a concert piece for baritone saxophone and piano designed with pedagogical depth in mind, particularly for advanced conservatory students.
The work explores a distinctive intervallic design: selected intervals are gradually widened and then contracted, shaping the piece’s architecture through constant variation of spacing and colour. This principle is treated with flexibility—appearing in lyrical passages, rhythmically charged sections, and moments of free, almost improvisatory interplay between saxophone and piano.
In its atmosphere and reflective undercurrent, the piece recalls the composer’s 5 Preludes from Gdańsk, making it, in the composer’s own words, “a kind of postscript to that Erasmus period of my life.”
Premiere:
30/03/2025, Bratislava (Slovakia), Concert Hall Dvorana VŠMU (Academy of Performing Arts).
Performers: alto saxophone – Viktória Kurthy, piano – Lukáš Zelenák
