Piano Trio No. 1, Op. 43
Written in 2020
Written in an intense creative burst over the course of just under a month, the Piano Trio No. 1 represents Jaďuďová’s deepening maturity in chamber music writing. Cast in three movements, the work balances lyricism with dynamic drive, weaving long-breathed themes with rhythmic interplay between violin, cello, and piano.
I.
The opening movement unfolds as a broad, multi-sectional form, beginning with the stillness of a Sostenuto before surging into a lively Allegro non troppo. The contrasting tempo markings—Moderato, Allegro molto, and Allegro vivo—create a continuous sense of transformation. Themes are passed fluidly between instruments, alternating between expansive lyricism and driving rhythmic exchanges.
II.
The slow movement opens with a warm, songlike Adagio cantabile. A noble Andante maestoso follows, introducing a more declamatory character before giving way to the flowing Allegro con moto. Throughout, the strings sing in close dialogue, underpinned by the piano’s harmonic richness.
III.
The finale in the form of variations on Slovak Folk Song „Kopala studienku“ bursts forth with energy, its Allegro energico framing contrasting passages of Moderato calm and Allegro molto brilliance. The music builds toward a spirited conclusion, bringing the trio to a close with vitality and cohesion.
