Marche funèbre, Op. 65
Written in 2025
“Something new can emerge only when the old first lets go.”
Written for solo organ, Marche funèbre takes the traditional funeral march as a point of departure for reflection on endings and beginnings. While its title and slow tread suggest mourning, the work is equally concerned with transformation—acknowledging loss while quietly opening the way for renewal.
The music unfolds in measured phrases, with a sustained harmonic foundation and restrained dynamic growth. The registration shifts gradually, creating changing layers of colour from subdued 8′ flutes to full reeds, before subsiding back into stillness.
Closing in quiet repose, Marche funèbre leaves a sense not only of farewell, but of space cleared for the arrival of something new.
