Cello Concerto No.1, Op. 32
Written in 2019, rev. 2021

Dedicated to Camille Thomas

Inspired by a concert of Camille Thomas, Tereza Jaďuďová’s Cello Concerto No. 1 represents her most ambitious orchestral work with a solo instrument to date (first full-lenght concerto). This piece balances lyricism and virtuosity, giving the soloist space for both cantabile expression and technical brilliance. Across its three movements, the concerto travels from impassioned drive to intimate reflection, concluding in a spirited finale.

I.
Opening with a bold orchestral statement, the first movement sets the stage for the soloist’s entrance. The Allegro Moderato blends rhythmic vitality with lyrical episodes, allowing the cello to sing above the orchestra while engaging in spirited dialogue with the ensemble.

II.
The second movement offers contrast through intimacy and expressivity. Subtle orchestration, including delicate use of instruments, frames the cello’s melodic line. The music is contemplative, with moments of quiet introspection and warm lyricism.

III.
The finale bursts forth with energy and rhythmic precision. The inclusion of cymbals and expanded brass writing adds brilliance to the movement’s exuberant character. The soloist moves between agile passagework and soaring lines, leading to a vigorous and triumphant close.
