4 Walzers, Op. 11
Written in 2013-2014
Tereza Jaďuďová’s 4 Walzers continue her exploration of the waltz form—this time with a more varied and nuanced emotional palette. Written shortly after her lyrical Romance, Op. 10, these four miniatures present a diverse series of moods, from light playfulness to quiet melancholy. Though the pieces are unified by triple meter and dance origins, each waltz reveals a distinct expressive aim, supported by careful phrasing and dynamic contrasts.
No. 1
Piano & Violin (or Saxophone)
Opening Andante, this waltz offers a lyrical and poised character. The melodic lines are clearly shaped, with gentle rubato and restrained charm. Later dynamic swells and harmonic shifts introduce subtle dramatic tension before returning to the initial calm.
No. 2
Solo Piano
Marked Allegro molto agitato, this movement is more urgent and impassioned. Rapid figuration, wide leaps, and abrupt contrasts give the waltz a stormy, almost impulsive quality. The energy is tempered by a brief, expressive middle section before the initial material returns.
No. 3
Piano & Violin
A waltz marked Lento malinconico, this piece turns inward. Slow tempo, soft dynamics, and a sparse texture create an atmosphere of quiet reflection. It unfolds gradually, allowing for expressive rubato and deep interpretive sensitivity.
No. 4
Solo Piano
Closing the set with Andante espressivo, the fourth waltz sings with elegant phrasing and sentimental warmth. Carefully shaped dynamics and harmonic colorations bring emotional depth, while the triple meter flows smoothly beneath expressive melodic contours.
