4 Impromptus, Op. 9
Written in 2013
Tereza Jaďuďová’s 4 Impromptus reflect a new stage in her compositional journey—technically more demanding, emotionally complex, and structurally diverse. Crafted over the span of one month, these pieces represent the composer’s self-declared artistic breakthrough. “Even though I’m far from Chopin,” she writes, “I am proud to have created pieces like these.” While rooted in the Romantic idiom, these works showcase a growing confidence and individuality.
Each impromptu carries its own emotional and stylistic fingerprint, ranging from lyrical reflection to dramatic outbursts. Together, they form a vivid cycle of contrasts, bound by spontaneous expression and compositional finesse.
No. 1
Bright and energetic, this impromptu brims with rhythmic drive and motivic play. Frequent shifts between lyrical passages and virtuosic flourishes create a dialogue of tension and release. Despite its brio, the piece allows for moments of gentle introspection, offering a rounded and compelling opening.
No. 2
This impromptu is marked by contrast. Angular rhythms and declamatory gestures alternate with smoother, sustained textures. The emotional landscape is ambiguous—restless, searching, at times noble. Its middle Trio section, marked Adagio cantabile, adds an expressive counterweight of lyrical beauty before the return of the more turbulent material.
No. 3
With its playful articulation and flowing pulse, the third impromptu channels a more light-hearted mood. Still, a touch of nostalgia permeates the texture. The work unfolds in a sequence of delicate patterns and subtle dynamic swells, balancing charm with quiet depth.
No. 4
A fiery conclusion to the set, this impromptu is defined by rhythmic volatility and harmonic boldness. Marked agitato and later Largo Espressivo, it juxtaposes fierce momentum with soulful introspection. The piece ends with a flourish, capping the cycle with virtuosic defiance and expressive resolve.
